Mindfulness and Distractions

As we transition into a new year, it is always a good time to reevaluate some of our old (bad?) habits.  Are we stressing ourselves out with impossible schedules, endless task lists and rushed or absent family time?  Make a point for 2019 to take inventory of how your time is spent, and write a list of things you would rather be doing for fun.  Being present in the moment is more important than ever, and that means setting aside dedicated time to spend with family, friends, or just exploring our own hobbies and pursuits.  Set aside this time without the distractions of smart phones, TV or video games.  Get outside, explore a new or familiar place, take in a view, and get some fresh air.  But be sure to do this regularly, not just on special occasions.  By turning off our constant distractions and just focusing on one healthy activity, we can calm our stress levels tremendously.

The Word is Out – DPC is Growing

2018 has been an amazing year for the Direct Primary Care movement.  Dr. Givens has been participating in local and national activities to advocate for DPC as part of a solution for America’s healthcare system woes.  Just recently Dr. Lee Gross, a DPC physician in Florida, testified before a congressional committee about the model, and how it can save dollars while at the same time improving access to great healthcare at your primary care physicians’ office.  To see a video of the hearing click here.  Dr. Josh Umbehr and Dr. Lee Gross have been featured on the Hannity Radio Show on several occasions, touting the amazing benefits for patients who join a DPC practice.  The number of physicians practicing Direct Primary Care is growing quickly, now up to over 900 nationwide.  A bill is pending that would help make Direct Primary Care arrangements a “qualified medical expense” in the IRS code, which amazingly it currently is not specifically.  Let’s continue to spread the word to our families and friends that primary care free of the interference of insurance can help patients get access to their physicians in a more affordable, accessible way.

Weight Loss Support Group

Starting in January, 2019, Dr. Givens will be forming a support group for current patients who want help with losing weight.  Using the principles of “clean” eating, low sugar, low simple carbohydrates, and optional intermittent fasting, we will be exploring ways to get longer lasting results.  Email her at [email protected] if you think you would be interested.  Meetings will take place at our clinic and in an online forum such as Facebook (optional).  This should be an exciting new way to team up with other patients facing the same challenges!

Taking New Patients

Our clinic has still been slowly growing!  In order to keep the quality of care high, and be able to provide the level of service you all deserve, membership will be capped soon, however.  If you have friends or family members who would benefit from affordable, accessible care we would love to get them in for an introduction.  With or without insurance, the DPC model of care breaks down the barriers between you and your physician, and that is what we strive to continue to do for our patients in 2019. Thanks to all of you for your kind and dedicated support, as well as the trust you have provided in us as your family medical team.

Pumpkin Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 butternut squash or half large calabaza pumpkin, cut into cubes

1/2 yellow onion, minced

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 inch of fresh ginger, minced

1/4 – 1 serrano pepper, minced (per your preference)

2 32 oz cartons of chicken broth, low sodium

1 TBSP curry

1 TBSP garam masala

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

salt to taste, at least 1/2 tasp

(optional) 1/2 cup heavy cream

In a large, heavy pot over medium-high heat, cook garlic, onion, ginger and serrano pepper for 3-4 minutes, or until soft.  Add chicken broth and pumpkin or squash cubes.  Bring to a boil, and cook 30-40 minutes or until pumpkin is cooked through.  Blend in a blender or with an immersion blender until smooth (be careful, it’s hot!).  Add spices and taste for salt, adding more if preferred.  Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly, and stir in optional heavy cream.  Enjoy!

Special Holiday Wishes

Linda, Bonnie and Dr. Givens wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
